The city of steel had ample reasons to be in a festive mood. Hamilton commemorated Canada's Family Day. It welcomed a distinguished delegation of Cuban government officials. It opened its heart to the members of the world-famous Cuban National Ballet. It demonstrated its pride for the awesome accomplishments of the Canadian Ballet Youth Ensemble.
On February 26 Hamilton Place once again filled to capacity with ballet  lovers. And once again Hamiltonians gathered to celebrate in grand style the magic of the classic dance. Once again the evening became way too short for the hauntingly beautiful performance. Because of the enthusiasm surrounding the event. Because in honouring the performers the elegant audience had no reservations displaying their love and enthusiasm for their own children.

The Nutcracker: Extraordinary Performances by the Children Of Both Nations at Havana’s Gran Teatro PDF Print E-mail

Havana – It was a remarkable moment. More so because it was absolutely unexpected. Wonderful. Genuine. Delightful. Truly emotional.
Inside the vast lobby of the Melia Cohiba hotel two long rows of Cuban children accompanied by their parents anxiously awaited the arrival of the Canadian children and their parents. It resembled an honour guard ready to welcome visiting dignitaries.
Each of the Cuban children held a single rose in their hands. Everyone was unusually quiet. It seemed as if the young dancers from the Cuban School of Ballet were too disciplined, too excited or too nervous to say anything. Perhaps they were aware of the momentous significance of this most unique, historical occasion. Perhaps all of the above.

Without a doubt The Nutcracker is the most everlasting fairytale of all times. It is a story best told next to a warm fireplace on Christmas Eve. It is a story best visualized in person and in all its staged splendour at Hamilton Place, where the classic ballet will have its lavish performance three weeks from now.
Although The Nutcracker is a story for children and about children, the tale would not be complete without adult participation, and that is precisely what has kept The Nutcracker so alive for 117 years. In Canada the production has brought together entire families. They have enthusiastically supported every step taken by the children and will attend every performance.
